Common Roulette Game Terms

No one wants to start playing roulette on the TV without being aware of the most basic terms and definitions associated with the game. A player without any knowledge of roulette not only makes a fool of themselves at the table but also inconveniences the dealer and the other players at the table. Hence, it is important to be aware of the basic terms associated with the game of roulette. Given below are some of them.

It is extremely important to know about the layout of the roulette table. There are two sections of the table – the inside section and the outside section. The inside section is divided into slots with a slot for each number on the roulette wheel. The outside section is where you can place bets on even or odd numbers or red or black numbers or dozen numbers and so on. In an American casino the roulette wheel has 38 slots, one each for the numbers 0 to 36 and the 38th slot for 00.

Chips
Chips are what you use to play the game. Before you reach the table it is required that you go to the cashier and exchange your money for chips. In roulette every player has different colored chips to separate them from the chips of other players. Bets are placed using chips and no player is supposed to touch them when the dealer announces “no more bets”. Touching the chips now could mean you could be thrown out of the table.

Inside and outside bets
Inside bets are when you bet on a specific number or a set of numbers. For example, when you place your bet on a single number it is called a straight bet and this is an example of an inside bet. When you place a bet on red or black it is called an outside bet. The roulette table has separate sections for placing inside and outside bets.

Croupier
The dealer is called the croupier and they are the ones that control the game. You need to be extremely careful and listen to each and every instruction of the dealer. It is also customary to tip the croupier with chips when you have won handsomely and would like to cash out now.

Ball
The ball is made of plastic and is spun in the opposite direction of the spinning wheel.
